In this project we investigate if the state-of-the-art method of Topology Optimization can be used to improve the efficiency of ammonia synthesis; an operation, that nowadays in fact accounts for 1% of the world’s energy consumption. Any improvement of these kinds of synthesis reactors will result in significant energy reduction and thereby decrease their environmental impact. In our new approach, we therefore numerically model a microfluidic reactor version, using the commercial software Comsol. Finally, we will investigate if the combined yield from several million optimized microfluidic reactors can match or even exceed that of an industrial chemical plant.
