In 2007 the bioethanol industry produced 24.5 billion liters of ethanol and 15.4 billion kg of distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS). The market value of DDGS for livestock feeding is relatively low due to high contents of fibers, sulfur, phosphor, possible presence of mycotoxins and high batch variation. To address this problem I have developed a novel protease-based process for simultaneous pretreatment of fibers and protein extraction. Using optimized process conditions the total bioethanol production was increased by 6.7%.
