In the first course given in mechanical engineering, students construct a small Stirling engine. This is an excellent case that allows work with many disciplines on a simple level. Results are tested using simple measurements. The engines can be manufactured a relatively low cost. Setting the construction up as a completion was highly motivating for the students.
